PLAIN SURVEY AND GEODETIC SURVEY

Plane and geodetic survey are two different methods used in surveying to measure and map the Earth's surface. While they share some similarities, they are distinct approaches with different purposes and techniques.

  1. Plane Survey: Plane survey, also known as plane surveying, is a method of surveying that assumes the Earth's surface is flat and neglects the curvature of the Earth. It is typically used for small-scale surveys, such as local surveys for construction projects, property boundaries, and mapping small areas. Plane surveying techniques include measuring angles and distances using traditional surveying instruments such as theodolites, total stations, and tape measures. The measurements are usually made on a horizontal plane, and elevation differences are not taken into account in plane surveying.

  2. Geodetic Survey: Geodetic survey, also known as geodetic surveying, is a method of surveying that accounts for the curvature of the Earth and uses geodetic datums and coordinates systems for accurate positioning on the Earth's surface. Geodetic surveying is typically used for large-scale surveys over long distances, such as mapping large areas, establishing national or global control networks, and precise positioning for satellite positioning systems like GPS (Global Positioning System). Geodetic surveying techniques use advanced technologies such as satellite-based positioning systems, precise leveling, and other geodetic instruments to measure angles, distances, and elevations with high accuracy.

In summary, plane surveying is used for small-scale surveys and assumes the Earth's surface is flat, while geodetic surveying is used for large-scale surveys and accounts for the curvature of the Earth. Both methods have their specific applications and are used in different contexts depending on the survey requirements and accuracy needed.
